Can anyone explain why several smaller doses throughout the day are better than one big dose a day?

Probably more of a big dose causes a herx reaction

It keeps the chlorine dioxide in your system for a longer period of time.

Because it will be converted back to chloride (sodium) in about 45-60 minutes (as per Andreas Kalcker's studies) or Jim Humble has said 2-4 hours.
It might be different depending on whether you use MMS or CDS, ( I think CDS gets used up faster than MMS hence the 45-60min.)
So hourly dosing just gives more effective coverage
