Sickle Cell Anemia

Does anyone have information about mms and sickle cell anemia? A forum search did not return anything. I am just starting my research on it. A family we are sponsoring for Christmas has a downs child with sickle cell. Spleen has already been removed, had a stroke, receiving regular blood transfusions. What a horror story for a child. Just found out. Cant sleep thinking about it. Promising info so far was suggestion that it is an autoimmune disorder. If true, was surprised not to see anything here. Thanks for any feedback.
