This is what Andreas Kalcker says about HCL and citric acid:
"MMS is the name Jim Humble gave to the combination of [strike]chlorine dioxide[/strike] sodium chlorite (NaClO2) activated with citric acid. Today, instead of using citric acid at 50%, we use hydrochloric acid (HCL) at 4%. To avoid confusion, we are going to call it CD, which stands for chlorine dioxide. CD is much milder and efficient than the old MMS activated with citric acid at 50%, and it barely causes any side effects, as I explain later on in this book."
"Using citric acid as an activator can provoke intestinal acidosis in sensitive individuals causing diarrhea, discomfort, and Citro-bacteria (bacteria that feeds on citrates). This mix is never used anymore, although it is equally effective. Note: Citric acid can be used to make CDS because it doesn't go in the final mix. We only use the gas created."
When he says CD, he means MMS1. I don't know why sellers are still selling 50% citric acid. HCL is the acid found in our stomachs.
